Guide to UK Legislation: There are two basic designs with the 'Running Man' as the common theme. The first complies with Design BS5499. The second to Health & Safety (Safety Signs & Signals) Regulations, both types of sign will be acceptable, BUT you should not have a mixture of both on the premises. For further information ask either your Local Fire Authority or your Local Building Control Survey. A fire exit/exit sign with an arrow should be used where the escape route from a building is not conspicuous or confusion could occur. All changes in direction in corridors, stairways and open spaces forming part of the escape route should be marked with additional signs.
